Hubballi: In a groundbreaking move, Antharya Neuropsychiatric Centre in Hubballi has introduced Virtual Reality (VR) based therapy for treating various mental health conditions. This is for the first time in North Karnataka, this technology is being used by a neuropsychiatry centre to treat patients. This innovative approach marks a significant advancement in mental health treatment in the region.

Revolutionizing Mental Health Treatment

Virtual Reality, a technology that creates immersive, three-dimensional environments, is now being harnessed to provide near-real experiences for patients undergoing mental health therapy. Using specialized computer programs and devices, including VR headsets, patients can interact with simulated environments designed to aid in their treatment.

Dr. Shivanand Hiremath, lead neuropsychiatrist at Antharya Neuropsychiatric Centre, explains, “VR therapy is proving to be an invaluable tool in treating a wide range of mental health conditions. We’re seeing promising results in patients with stress disorders, insomnia, anxiety, panic disorders, phobias, OCD, and even addiction.”

Diverse Therapeutic Applications

The centre offers a variety of VR-based psychological therapies, including:

  1. Guided meditation
  2. Breathing exercises
  3. Yoganidra
  4. Jacobson’s Progressive Muscular Relaxation (JPMR)
  5. Exposure and response prevention for OCD
  6. Cue-based therapy for addiction
  7. Mindfulness practices

The VR Therapy Experience

Therapy sessions are conducted by trained psychologists under the supervision of psychiatrists. Each session typically lasts 30-45 minutes, with most mild cases requiring 3-5 sessions. “The beauty of VR therapy is that it’s completely non-invasive and free from side effects,” Dr. Chaitra Hiremath adds.

For patients unable to visit the centre regularly, Antharya offers a customized mobile app available for both Android and iOS devices, extending the reach of their innovative treatment approach.
